Another Untitled

Hi! I'm an Eagles fan....have we met?
Now before you assume that I am the atypical fan who proves the value of hooked on phonics by obnoxiously reciting all the letters in the EAGLES name ; hear me out. I didn't always follow the Philadelphia Eagles; it just happened.

I remember a 4 year stretch when I absolutely loved the Buffalo Bills. Call it front running or call it an insatiable appetite for disappointment. Call it what you wish. I remember being a soft ass kid and rooting for the Bills year after year after year.....and after year for the sole reason of seing them win when no one expected them too. Looking back on it now it makes it easier to accept the shortcomings of my beloved Iggles.

I could easily provide an in depth analysis as to why the Eagles are probably at home today wearing washed up sweatpants and watching EstrogenSPN instead of preparing for the 2nd round of the playoffs. But that would be too typical of a scorned Eagles fan. For now, my memories will have to suffice.

I remember Randall Cunningham treating grown ass men like track hurdles every Sunday. I remember Ricky Waters short-arming a catchable ball over the middle against Tampa Bay. I remember Donovan McNabb playing on a fractured ankle and being carried down the field by his linemen. I remember when Hollis Thomas stole Mike Vicks soul on a QB Draw in Atlanta during the playoffs. I could keep going; but I think my point has been made. I remember a lot about the Eagles because I have seen a lot.

The Eagles organization needs to take the opposite approach this off season. Let the memories go and make good football decisions. I watched the Eagles Press Conference today and listened to Andy Reid sound like a coach who remembered his memories far too well. This isn't 2004 anymore and the Eagles most certainly arent 13-1. When asked what he thought about Desean Jacksons twitter beef with Cowboys players prior to Saturday's game; Big Red's response "I'm not sure I even know what a tweet is". This response alone should have Reid fired. Ok that was a joke. But; on a serious note, the head coach of any franchise should know that its 2010 and the tactics that worked so good for the Eagles in years past should be forgotten.

The Eagles need to take an honest look at their team and evaluate which players have "old school game" and which players can actually show up on Sunday and compete. I love the Eagles for all the memories they have provided me over the years. Those memories will mean nothing if they are continually associated with years of disappointment. I won't go on record and say that the house needs to be cleaned and every player over 30 should be gone. I will go on record and say that accuracy is important and "that's my bad" is no longer acceptable. I didn't want a Superbowl ring this year; because there are far better teams out there deserving of such an honor. I did want the Eagles to progress. That did not happen. Rather than looking back; let's look forward and hope the Eagles evaluate the team, the needs and the year we are in.

Needs:
Greater accuracy from the QB position. (Completion percentage during losses over the past 4 seasons) 57.9%, 57.3%, 57% and 55.7%. Take a stab in the dark at the percentage for this year.

A commitment to the run. I respect all the accomplishments of Marty Mornhinweg, but he is the same coach who helped the Detroit Lions to a 5-27 record at one point.

A non-tender attitude. Far be it from me to actually claim that a professional athlete is soft. But; there are some definite tenderloins on this team. Stop focusing on being cute and play the game that was called a "man's game".
